How Social Media Affects How You Think

There are about 1.94 billion monthly active Facebook users worldwide, while Instagram boasts of more than 700 million users, and Twitter continues its position of strength in its niche with more than 313 million users. If those numbers aren't scary/impressive (scary impressive?), the results of a study made by influencer marketing agency Mediakix are downright startling. Mediakix calculated that an average person would spend a total of five years and four months of their whole lives using social media - way ahead of eating/drinking (three years and five months), grooming (one year and 10 months), and actual socializing (1 year, 3 months). Social media usage came only behind watching TV (seven years and eight months). This can be troubling especially now that scientists have recently confirmed 'brain plasticity' - that our brains are malleable: they can relearn, remodel, and rewire themselves. With such a huge block of our lives spent on social media, it is undeniable that ...

SOCIAL WORK: A Brighter Future ADVERTORIAL

A GREAT DEAL IS BEGINNING TO CHANGE IN SOCIAL WORK, PARTICULARLY FOR SOCIAL WORKERS WHO WORK WITH CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. Despite a difficult year where media scrutiny of social workers has been intense, developments are taking place across the West Midlands that will build understanding and confidence in social workers and help them get on with the job they signed up for: improving children and young people's lives. Councils across the West Midlands, including Coventry, are working hard - and with each other - as part of a national drive to strengthen the way social workers are recruited, trained and supported. The social work workforce of the future Social work is a career like no other and it's vital to attract the very best people into the profession, from all walks of life. This is why local councils in the West Midlands are taking part in a new 'earn and learn' scheme to attract other professionals to a career in social work with children and families. SOCIAL WORK...

Social Enterprise Development

The first National Social Business Roundtable Summit 2017 gathered by the Benito and Catalina Yap Foundation (BCYF) at the Enderun Colleges last Wednesday united delegates of cooperatives, loads of trade, business gatherings, social business visionaries, reasonable exchange, small scale money, administrators, and so forth., to examine how social business visionaries have added to the Philippine economy and how social ventures could be grown further. The need to define " social enterprises " was seen as necessary as there are government assistance programs in place to support them with more coming as articulated by Senator Bam Aquino, a social entrepreneur now public servant.  Social Enterprise Development Antonio Yap of the BCYF had formulated a set of statements leading to a definition. "We made money and we want to help society" characterizes organizations with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) models which often engage in philanthropy. "Helping society i...

Gauging Personal Financial Capability

With college graduates facing a changing employment landscape, rising student debt and a generation of retiring baby boomers to help support in the years to come, learning to manage personal finances is crucial for young Americans. Gauging Personal Financial Capability Financial Capability The seeds of personal financial capability are sowed early in life. Unfortunately, progress in personal finance education has slowed since the mid-2000s, according to the Council for Economic Education's 2014 Survey of the States, which studied K-12 economic and financial education in the United States. April is National Financial Literacy Month, an opportune time to examine some startling statistics showing a lack of progress in personal financial capability in Memphis and elsewhere in Tennessee. Credit rating agency TransUnion reported last year that Memphis- area residents have lower credit scores than residents of any other metropolitan area in the nation. Memphis also is one of the most ...

Technique May Reveal Alien Life

A new scientific technique developed by a team of University of Hawaii astronomers may help in the search for life in the planetary system closest to ours, and maybe beyond. Led by Svetlana Berdyugina, a visiting scientist at the UH NASA Astrobiology Institute, the team has found a way to detect life forms through reflected light using polarizing filters -- similar to Polaroid sunglasses or 3-D movie goggles -- even in the glow of a star millions of times brighter than a planet. Technique life The findings, published in the International Journal of Astrobiology, were presented last week at the International Astronomical Union General Assembly in Honolulu. Scientists from the University of Hawaii are Jeff Kuhn, David Harrington and John Messersmith. Berdyugina is from the Institute of Physics of the University of Freiburg and the Freiburg Kiepenheuer Institute for Solar Physics. In their research, the team developed a method of detecting life as we know it in photosynthetic pigments, w...

Technique's Practitioners Say They're Breathing Life

When Bob and Patricia Lawrence moved to Ponte Vedra Beach from Cairo, Egypt , in March 2000, they planned a leisurely life packed with fun and travel. At 57, Bob Lawrence had taken early retirement from his career as Lockheed-Martin's president for Africa, the Middle East and Pakistan. Say They're Breathing Life Life Technique "We had taken two summer leaves during our 11 years in Cairo and driven down the East Coast of the United States looking for the perfect retirement spot," recalls Patricia Lawrence. "We liked Ponte Vedra Beach best. Bob was a golfer and a fisherman, and I don't do cold weather well. We went online, found a Realtor and bought our house in Ponte Vedra." After living their dream for nearly 1 1/2 years, the nightmare began. In October 2001, Bob Lawrence was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In January, he died. Ironically, the couple learned about "The Art of Living" while one of them was dying. Last year, as she researched a...

Which goals are strived for?

In order to classify the references we made use of a format based on the work of Smith and Tillema (2001). We made a distinction between two purposes: certification/selection/accountability and development. Nine references were connected to the first group of goals, while 31 references were classified under the developmental goal. Fourteen references were connected to both categories. That last observation shows that in a relatively large amount of studies no clear distinction is made between certification and development. In other words, formative assessment and summative assessment are often integrated, while it is mentioned that the PDP will have no effect if this distinction is not made Next, the analysis of the selected studies resulted in the following nine clusters of goals. read more:  what is love Which goals are strived for? (see Table 5 in the Appendices for a detailed overview): (1) professional development (2) reflective learning (3) providing evidence (4) documenting ...

What is love?

What is love? Can you get it from a bouquet of roses and chocolates? Why are mommies and daddies together while my classmate's parents are not? These are just some of the questions that seem to fluster most moms, especially these Valentine's week, when kids can see the romantic gestures and gifts. Curious at how they answered questions on love and marriage, Moms&Kids asked a couple of celebrity moms "How did you explain the concepts of love and marriage to your kids?" and all agreed that it is not something that you say, but show. "I don't think I ever truly explained as much as I showed it. My husband and I always tell them that we love them. As for marriage, they see how Jappy and I treat each other, which is with respect, love and affection. I think more than anything that is the best way for them to understand what marriage is about. " What is love? What is love? "Love is when you care about somebody and want them to be happy. When you love...
